Watersheds & Non-Point Source Education Unit

Purpose

The Watersheds and Non-Point Source Education Unit (Unit) was a successful collaborative effort between the Town of Chesterton Storm Water Quality Program and Chesterton Middle School.

This 3 to 4 week water quality and water conservation unit was held annually from 2007 to 2013 for 7th and 8th grade science students by Ms. Jennifer Gadzala, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Operator and Ms. Samantha Hayes, Science Teacher.

Objectives

The Unit met numerous Indiana school curriculum requirements. The Unit objectives include:

  • Addressing local water quality issues
  • Creating awareness on personal water consumptive uses and water conservation
  • Defining and delineating watersheds
  • Defining and delineating wetlands
  • Explaining water chemistry in the classroom and the field
  • Making aware the impacts of invasive species on the natural environment and the economy

Finances

Financial support was provided through the allocation of storm water fees administered by the Chesterton Storm Water Utility Department.
