Sanitary Sewer Issues
After Hours Issue
In the event of an after hours, 4:30 p.m. to 8 a.m., sanitary sewer problem, please call the Chesterton Police Department at 219-926-1136. The Police Department will contact the proper individual(s) to assess and deal with the problem.
Property owners should check with their agent about coverage for sewer backups, most policies need a rider to cover backups.
The Town of Chesterton utility has a comprehensive sewer cleaning program, yet backups do occur. The utility has ordinances limiting what is put into the system, but has little control of what flushed into the system by its customers.
Footballs, baseballs, frisbees, grease, bath towels, and more have all been found in a pipe or lift station.
Grease is a big issue because it cools to form clumps and attaches to larger items to restrict flow, thereby increasing the chance for a backup. Grease should never be poured down a drain.
DO NOT flush wipes of any kind. The wipes block pumps.
The Chesterton Utility will do its best to maintain the collection system to prevent backups. If a backup does occur, we will respond quickly to address the situation and work with any affected homeowner to minimize damage.
