The Street, Sanitation, and Central Services Departments are all in the same location for efficiency and staffing purposes. Our goal is to provide the best service to the residents of Chesterton as efficiently as possible.

Staffing for all of these Departments consist of:

• Street Commissioner
• Foreman
• Central Services Manager
• Administrative Assistant for Street, Sanitation and Central Services Departments
• Nine staff employees

The following are just some of our duties and responsibilities:

• Maintain Town streets—Patching, paving and crack sealing
• Snow removal
• Maintenance of over 5,000 trees within the Town’s right-of-way
• Maintain traffic signals on Town roads
• Sidewalk replacement programs
• Storm sewer maintenance
• Maintain alleys
• Maintain and install street signs and markings
• Maintain decorative lighting in the downtown area and South Calumet Road

Sanitation Department

The same employees of the Street Departments perform the duties within the Sanitation Department. Those duties and responsibilities include:

• Street sweeping
• Brush pick up
• Leaf pick up
• Dispense and track inventory of Town recycling bins.
• Oversee the Town’s Refuse and Recycling contract

Central Services

In 2008 Central Services was established to perform maintenance on most of the Town’s vehicles and equipment. Central Services maintains about 86 vehicles and pieces of equipment for the Town. The department consists of three mechanics that are responsible for maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment for the following Town Departments:

• Street
• Police
• Utility
• Storm Water
• Engineering
• Building
• Fire
