The Fritz C. Dietrich Environmental Control Facility, Chesterton’s wastewater treatment facility, services the Town of Chesterton, Town of Porter and the Indian Boundary Conservancy District. The facility can treat 4.6 million gallons per day (MGD) diurnal flow and 10 MGD during wet weather events. The facility consists of an influent building with three pumps, six primary clarifiers, six fine bubble aeration tanks, three final clarifiers, one ultra violet disinfection chamber and two re-aeration units. The facility also has two primary anaerobic digesters to treat the primary and waste activated sludge. The digested sludge is transferred to a secondary digester for further treatment. The final process in this system is pressing the solids into a cake to be land applied at a local farm. The Collection System includes 31 lift stations and 68 miles of sanitary sewers with pipe sizes ranging from 4” to 48”.
The Sanitary Utility Billing includes your wastewater fee, refuse fee, and storm water fee and are billed on a bimonthly basis (6 bills a year). The Utility bills are generated mid month during the odd months, and are always due on the 7th of every even month (Feb, Apr, June, Aug, Oct, Dec). The sanitary sewer fee is based upon water consumption. The Utility is provided this information from Indiana American Water Company. For customers that are on a well, they are billed a flat rate. Payment can be made by mail or in person at the Chesterton Town Hall. The Town Hall is located at the intersection of 8th Street and Broadway. Please use the entrance near the Fire Department.
The Utility has a contract with Indiana American Water to provide shutoff of water service for nonpayment of Sanitary Sewer Bill. Past due notices are mailed 10 days prior to shut off. In addition the Utility can place tax liens on the property for nonpayment of the Sanitary Sewer Bill.
All Residential Rental Units are required to pay a $100.00 deposit.
All Commercial Rental Units are required to pay a $260.00 deposit.
