Local Government

The Chesterton Town Council serves as the Executive/Legislative body of the Town of Chesterton. All payment claims are approved by the Council as well as approval of bi-monthly payroll. Ordinances and resolutions, establishing the laws of the Town, are adopted by the Council. The members appoint most Department Heads and also make appointments annually to the various Town boards (Advisory Plan Commission, Advisory Board of Zoning Appeals, Parks & Recreation Board, Storm Water Board, Police Commission and Utility Service Board, to name a few). The annual budget is also established by the Council, as is the salary compensation for all Town employees.

The Council meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month, with the exception of December when only one meeting is held, the second Monday. These meetings are open to the public.
